The food-related blog of a former ice cream truck driver living in New York City. I may just be an eater, but I've got friends in yummy places.

Brooklyn Edible Social Club, Ghetto Gourmet

If you haven’t joined the Ghetto Gourmet yet… well, shame on you, what kind of foodie are you?

Upon moving to new york, one of the first things I did was attend a GG dinner party. I was 19, a little young and broke (and vegetarian) for a dinner party network, but I wasn’t hearing that. I showed up to a Tribecca loft, floor pillow and cheap wine in hand, and my foodie seed was watered and nurtured over conversation with complete strangers. I haven’t yet committed to any other networks, although I once went vegan and checked out the amazing and more affordable 4 Course Vegan. I’m more broke now than I was then, so if I had the money/wasn’t driving an ice cream truck this coming saturday night, I’d totally be at this event:

The Girls Sings

When this woman walked in to my life….pssshh. I was stunned. I hadn’t met anyone more cheery, more honest, more motivated, or more photogenic. At any moment she would burst out singing or dancing, she always had wild stories about adventures past, and she always drew people in.

Her father was a cantor, her mother was a showgirl (turned pilates/yoga instructor)… can anyone say jazz singer? After her father died, she took his place on the bima during the jewish high holidays in Florida. For the first time in 5 years, I attended temple for Yom Kippur at the synagogue where she sang, and I cried… uncontrollably. Maybe the whole thing was deeply spiritual, maybe I was cranky that morning, but I really think I was just moved by the song she sang and how beautifully she sang it.

Her entire life, Aleksandra has been a performer, she has had the time to work on that versatile voice, and her dedication shows.

Speaking of shows, Aleksandra is performing August 30th at 9:30pm at the Metropolitan Room (34 W 22nd Street NY, NY). Don’t miss the chance to see her exuberance in action.

$10 online, $15 at the door. ::cough:: 2 drink minimum.

More talented friends?! Ya don’t say!

…and its another sexy redhead!

Blue Kid’s music is infectious and charming… y’know what I mean? Not infectious in an “ew, thats not supposed to ooze” kind of way, but in the sense that, once you know it, you’ll just keep singing it. Its charming in the way that it makes you smile when you’re listening to it. Maybe thats because I know Lydia and I think she is hilarious and sexy and that is a dangerous combination.

I had “All over the place“ in my head for 3 days straight. One morning I opened my eyes and my first thought was the opening line of the song. My cure was to listen to it non-stop and to belt it out every chance I got. Its just that kind of music.

Blue Kid is playing at 11pm this coming Saturday, July 25th, with Bird Love and Jay Kustka at the Seaport, 210 Front street ( at Beekman), NYC. Pretty interesting venue! Cover is $5 and there is a bar.

I’ve always said I’m constantly surrounded by talented people… I’d just like to prove it again.

The delicious Austin McCutchen (Big Honey Mama) just offered up a clip that made my night. I’ve known Austin for a few years, and first saw him play with Neckbeard Telecaster in a grimey hot venue somewhere near the water in Williamsburg with a busted “bar” (table) in the back where I bought what I believe was my first PBR. Suddenly Brooklyn didn’t feel right and I understood for a moment why he called himself a “hick.” I’ve been to just a few of his shows since, but each time I’ve found myself swooning, wanting to step in to my June Carter Cash sub-personality, and get the eff outta town.

I’m not a music reviewer but I think I have great taste ;) and sharing is what I do best.

Check out his interview in Gothamist and his more “songwritery” myspace page.
