The food-related blog of a former ice cream truck driver living in New York City. I may just be an eater, but I've got friends in yummy places.

Catching Elephant is a theme by Andy Taylor
I first began blogging as a teen. I was an obsessive story teller and poetry writer (and performer) and accumulated many many notebooks and loose papers over my high school career.
At one point, not fully understanding the ways to the world wide web, I printed my favorite posts, comments and all, incase somehow my digital diary disappeared. Cute, I know.
To measure food production in New York city in small community gardens, Sponsored by Open Space Institute in partner with Green Thumb NYC, Farming Concrete is asking for volunteers to survey the crop of a community garden of their choice. It only takes an hour or two and the gardens themselves are already mapped out, so you don’t have to wonder which ones have already been surveyed!
“For the first time, metrics will be developed to estimate yield from a small, poly-culture raised bed, a common model for urban agriculture with characteristics that differ vastly from large-scale conventional agriculture. This information would also inform any new shifts in policy related to urban agriculture and push New York City ahead of the curve in expanding urban food production. The data from this will be available to the public and will be able to answer for each garden and for all gardens as a whole, “We at ___ Community Garden grew ___ pounds of food in ____ square feet, which is worth $___ and prevented approximately ___lbs of greenhouse gases from entering the atmosphere.”
Blue = not yet mapped
Green = mapped
Yellow = someone plans to map soon
Pink = no food, mostly botanical
I’ll be doing some surveying! I hope you do too!
